Representation of Gender
In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styles accordingly"
Laura Mulvey feels that men and women are treated differently and they are not seen as an equal gender. She also feels that males gaze on females as in most music videos especially hip-hop and R&B. I feel the representation in some music of women is disgusting as it is very provocative but on the other hand, that is what the viewers want to see and is proven in the past that is sells to the public.
1) - Shakira – Hips Don’t Lie
This song maybe seen as provocative but I feel different as the pop idol Shakira is of a middle eastern origin, being brought up in Columbia belly dancing played a key role of her expression growing up as a child but as the audience see it as her just shaking her bum it as seen as sexy and provocative.
2) - Christina Aguilera feat Red-Man – Dirrty
Christina Aguilera is of an American origin collaborated with the Def Jam rapper Red-Man. This video in my eyes is revolting and the sexual content should be 18+. I say this because she is wearing minimal clothing throughout. This video shows Mulvey's idea of women satisfying the male fantasy is greatly shown in this video. There are a huge amount of close-ups on the artist's hips as she almost screams the word 'Dirrty' which shows her passion for what she is trying to portray to her target audience which in all cases would be the male gender. Although there is a male artist on the track I still feel like it is intended at males because the story-line of the video is clearly based on Aguliera. The mis-ene scene in this video also portrays her 'Sexy' image as you see her appear inside a cage and also on a motorbike. Her outfit is also revealing as it is a tight leather and most of it is ripped apart in the places she would like to say are her best assets for example her legs and stomach.
