07. Andrew Goodwin's theory

Andrew Goodwin's thesis' are that music videos should present in either of the following methods

- Illustration
  • There should be a correlation between the lyrics and the visuals; the visuals should either illustrate  the lyrics or contradict the lyrics.
- Disjuncture

  • When the lyrics have no relation to the visuals and are completely random

- Amplification

  • When certain words or phrases are amplified in the video

He says that music videos are often constructed by the link between the visuals and the song plus the artist. Relationships are built between these in the video, and the close-ups of the artists gives them the representation and publicity they require. Voyeurism is used to increase the video’s attractiveness, particularly to males, whilst intertextuality is often employed in humorous videos.
