08. Carol Vernallis Theory

Music videos have ranged from simple tableaux of a band playing its instruments to multimillion dollar, high-concept extravaganzas. Music videos have long evolved from a steady camera focusing on a band while they play they're song. Modern music videos feature elaborate stories, Intricate choreography and special effects that cost millions of pounds. Music video's have a major impact on whats popular and relevant.

Carol Vernallis closely observed the camerawork and editing involved in music videos her conclusion was that edits in music videos are much more frequent than in films or TV shows she speaks about the rules of continuity being broken to draw attention to what is on screen, edits are often special effects are used and jump cuts are often used.

07. Andrew Goodwin's theory

Andrew Goodwin's thesis' are that music videos should present in either of the following methods

- Illustration
  • There should be a correlation between the lyrics and the visuals; the visuals should either illustrate  the lyrics or contradict the lyrics.
- Disjuncture

  • When the lyrics have no relation to the visuals and are completely random

- Amplification

  • When certain words or phrases are amplified in the video

He says that music videos are often constructed by the link between the visuals and the song plus the artist. Relationships are built between these in the video, and the close-ups of the artists gives them the representation and publicity they require. Voyeurism is used to increase the video’s attractiveness, particularly to males, whilst intertextuality is often employed in humorous videos.

RESEARCH FOR MUSIC VIDEO: A summary of the main points of Andrew Goodwin's theory, including examples of videos following his main ideas

Andrew Goodwin identifies a number of different aspects towards music videos. This includes:
·         The idea of traditional narratives not being applied to music videos, pop in particular. Because pop music is around music it does not exactly have a film structure, i.e. normality, problem, resolution but a fading and type of closure. The singer is performing, narrating and acting as a character furthermore the singer looks into the camera which gives a sense of audience interaction.
·         As pop videos rely on repetition to make a song easily recognised via chorus and or the beat. It is likely that there are intertextual references. For example it may have a tie-in with a particular advert, may be used in a film, TV show (Glee)
·         There is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals. The visuals usually illustrating which means the video is telling the story of the song. Amplifying where the videos add new meanings that may not contradict the lyrics but emphasise its meaning, or disjuncture meaning the video has nothing to do with the lyrics. This same relationship is between the music and the visuals
·         The importance of close ups and the singer’s image
·         Voyeurism is also used as a way to attract viewers to the video. This is usually done through females and their representation
·         Videos try to appeal to a wide audience as much as possible, without ignoring their main audience. For example in ‘Kanye West ft Lupe Fiasco – Touch the Sky’ the video and instrumental has a 60’s, 70’s style to it which older viewers may find entertaining, yet the element of rap, ‘bling’ and ‘sexy females’ still exist which still involves the target audience for rap music who tend to be teenagers and young adults.

RESEARCH FOR MUSIC VIDEO: Analysis of a music video that you consider to be the best example of the music video form

The reason why I consider this to be the best example of a music video is because, it defines what a music video is in my opinion. It is entertaining, very illustrative which is a part of Goodwin's theory. Furthermore this is a 'film like' video which is not really a typical music video although it does contain elements of performance, base tracks and repetition etc. This video entertains me, and it also promotes other talents such as acting as we see two famous actresses feature in this video, which makes it much more interesting and generates conversation.

Summary Of Vernalis's Theory

In the book 'Experience Music Video: Aesthetics and Cultural Context' by Vernallis, she discussed the essence and importance of camerawork and editing within a music videos.

Vernalis view was that edits were used much more regularly in music videos then in any other form of screen (like films, tv drama and commercials) and the more edits that begin to stand out and become more frequent within a video, the more successful the music video will become as it will reach its target audience faster . This is normally done with the technique of disjuncture, but at the same time the edits match the rhythm of the beat whilst cutting in and out of shots.

Also :
  •  There are a lot of jump cuts, editing and transitions which help draw attention.
  •  There are a lot of special editing effects used together with disjuncture.
  •  The camera is NEVER in a static position throughout the whole sequence.
  • A lot of continuity editing.
  • Structure (as in a base track) is commonly used.
An example of the theory out into practise is the music video of Mark Ronson & the Business Intl- Bike Song.

There are lots of slow motion throughout the song that focuses on the actors (for example: in the girls riding up towards the men) and about 20-40% on the objects (like the bikes). Throughout the song we also see very quick and obvious edits that match the beat/ flow of the song. The camera moves with the characters, the objects and the rhytmn. There is eye contact made at the beginning of the chorus but during most of the verses, the actor narrates the story through the song. The repeated shots of the artist are shown to illustrate the story (and is part of the base track)

RESEARCH FOR MUSIC VIDEO: What is the function of a music video ?

Music videos are simply the video that goes along with a song. They are used as a way to cross-platform market for expanding an artist’s profile, as it is one of the only ways artists are highly recognised. Furthermore by creating a music video it raises a reaction from the audience which helps them remember the song (regardless of how good/bad it is). Lastly music videos can also be another way to platform other talents an artist may have such as acting and dancing which is highly seen throughout many videos by people such as Lady Gaga, Madonna, Beyonce etc. As well as platform talents 'behind the scenes' i.e many choreographers have become famous because of the famous dance routines they have created, an example of a well established choreographer through music videos is Laurie-Ann Gibson

Music television formerly known as MTV is an American television network, that was launched in 1981 and has been around for 30 years. The music channel was originally created in order to play music videos and has had a huge impact on the music industry. The success of MTV has allowed to feature different programs and channels all over the world. The impact MTV has on artists are very big and once an artist has their video on any MTV channel, they feel like they have made it !

RESEARCH FOR MUSIC VIDEO: Copies of copyright clearance that you wrote during your summer break

A summary of the main points of Andrew Goodwin's theory

In Goodwin's theory, he identified a number of key features which distinguish the music video as a form. They are:

  • A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
  • A relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
  • All genres are complex and diverse in terms of music video style.
  • Record companies will demand a lot of close-ups of the main artist or vocalist. This helps the audience see and identify who the main artist is (and most probably what they are about)
  • Voyeurism isa factor present in music videos. For example:The  treatment of females, and also in terms of systems of looking. Some examples are screens within screens, cameras, mirrors and etc.
  • It is likely to include intertextual references, either to other music videos or to films and TV texts, these provide further gratification and pleasure for the viewers/fans.
So an example of illustration in a music video could be ''Papa dont preach'' by Madonna. Just like other forms of illustraion within music video, papa dont preach has a narrative within the video that relates to the lyrics in the song and tells a story.

Another video that i consider a best example of music video form

I have decided to shoose another video that i find to be a good example of music video form; the video is 'Noah and the Whale- Five Years Time'

The briefly summarise the video:
  • A band is playing
  • A performance is also being shown
  • A destination of memoirs (and memoires) are being shown and the perfomers are reminiscing / revisiting them.

The lead singer (man) sings in some of the edits, and the lyrics forms the structure of the video, which makes the performance and narrative fit well together.

In the video, you do often see the artist/'s sing in some unusual cuts which makes the video seem more fun to watch because you dont know the order of the who are gonna be seen singing next, but the main artist is the key focus of the song and the ratio of narrative to performance is 50:50

i like the use of editing within the music video, it doesn't seem very complicated and the sharp structure of the video creates a happy and playful music video to enjoy and watch.

A video that i consider a best example of music video form

The music video that i have chosen is Pixie Lott- Boys And Girls.

The 'narrative' in this video is clear, and illustrates the lyrics very well. What happens in the music video is a bunch of girls and boys coming together to simply have fun.

The artists central position within this narrative is shown as her being the center of attention, playing around with the boys and having fun with the girls. We see the artist sing and dance, and there are lots of close- ups of her which helps establish that she is the main artist as she is the main focus in the video; and the ratio of narrative to performance is 50:50.

The reason why I think this video is a good example of the music video form is that there are lots of jump cuts, and shots that helps the audience understand and see a personality of the artist, and the jump cuts don't follow a sequence which lifts the bubbly persona of the artist. And like said previously, there are many close-ups that help establish the artist and also helps the audience view and see her personal style.

What is the function of a music video ?

The main priority of a music video is to promote the artist and by doing do, the characteristics of a music video are lots of close-ups (so the audience are familiar with who the artist is) lots of moving camera work (which makes it more easier to identify that it is not an opening sequence or any other form of media, - it is a music video) and we see a lot of quick edits, with unusual transitions and jump cuts.

Music video differ from conventional broadcast narrative because in a music video, there are a lot of slow motion , unusual transitions, the chorus within the song provides the structure of the video, the duration is much shorter than conventional broadcast narrative (3-5mins) and finally there are lots of close-ups which helps establish the artist.

Review Of Previous Student Video.

Group 12 - Nigel,Beverley,Camilla,Nigel.

I particularly liked this because performance were very affective as they were confident.  The edits and shot  were varied which made this very interesting to watch as it was never static. The shots that were effective was the close up as it had a lot of emphasis. Another element that was excellent were there costumes as they suited the roles they were playing, the girl character (Camilla) outfit was impressing because it was a sparkly gold short black as it was very provocative which suited her character. The background was also vital as it gives and insite into the lives of the Artist. I also felt there editing was really strong as the wipes, fades and slow motion was very effective and emphasized certain parts of the video.

Character in Shades - Shows Glamour

Shows Provocative side of Character

Lauren Mulvey's Theory on Representation.

Representation of Gender

In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styles accordingly"

Laura Mulvey feels that men and women are treated differently and they are not seen as an equal gender. She also feels that males gaze on females as in most music videos especially hip-hop and R&B. I feel the representation in some music of women is disgusting as it is very provocative but on the other hand, that is what the viewers want to see and is proven in the past that is sells to the public.

1)      Shakira  – Hips Don’t Lie

This song maybe seen as provocative but I feel different as the pop idol Shakira is of a middle eastern origin, being brought up in Columbia belly dancing played a key role of her expression growing up as a child but as the audience see it as her just shaking her bum it as seen as sexy and provocative.

2)      -  Christina Aguilera feat Red-Man – Dirrty

Christina Aguilera is of an American origin collaborated with the Def Jam rapper Red-Man. This video in my eyes is revolting and the sexual content should be 18+. I say this because she is wearing minimal clothing throughout. This video shows Mulvey's idea of women satisfying the male fantasy is greatly shown in this video. There are a huge amount of close-ups on the artist's hips as she almost screams the word 'Dirrty' which shows her passion for what she is trying to portray to her target audience which in all cases would be the male gender. Although there is a male artist on the track I still feel like it is intended at males because the story-line of the video is clearly based on Aguliera. The mis-ene scene in this video also portrays her 'Sexy' image as you see her appear inside a cage and also on a motorbike. Her outfit is also revealing as it is a tight leather and most of it is ripped apart in the places she would like to say are her best assets for example her legs and stomach.

Short Summary Of Vernalis's Theory.

Vernalis released a book called 'Experience Music Video: Aesthetics and Cultural Context. In this book she covered camerawork and editing within a music videos. Vernalis came to a conclusion that edits were used much more regularly in music videos then in any other form of screen for example films and commercials. As these more frequent edits seemed to stand out to the target audience they are done as disjuncture, but at the same time seemed to catch the rhythm of the beat whilst cutting back and fourth from shots.

- Slow motion editing is used to emphasize a piece of mis en scene used or on the artist.
- Frequent use of Jump Cuts/Edits/Transition draw attention.
- Special editing effects used together with disjuncture.
- Camera is never static.
- Continuity editing.
- Structure - Base Track is regularly used.

A Summary Of Andrew Goodwin's Theory.

Andrew Goodwin feels that pop videos do not impose a traditional approach like seen in a film or novel.  The reasons for this is because pop songs are built around song and very rarely have any structure, which is normality problem resolution. In  Pop videos the artist is 9/10 always the lead performer, they also look directly into the camera which is an extensions performance which tries to connect with the viewers. Pop music video are very similar as they all use the same guidelines which a key element of this is repetition. Pop uses a lot of the same images and normally have a chorus which they use to try and make there song familiar to there target audience which I personally feel is effective as I have learnt to know songs like this from previous experience. Pop is a genre which is very known by the public as it is on the TV,Radio and used in Adverts. As there are three types of relation between music videos, which are - illustration, amplification and disjuncture.

Illustration : When lyrics in the song are being performed in the actual Music Video. A perfect exampled performed below -

Disjuncture : Is when the video has no relevance to the lyrics in the song, which is unusual - example below -

Amplification: Amplification is when the video give the lyrics more meaning and the viewers get a deeper insite into the Artist mind-frame.  Example below -

Analysis Of A Music Video

Kanye West Feat Rihanna and Kid Cuddi - The Lights

I choose this video as I thought the flashing effects and the editing on the video was simple but at the same time effective. I feel the brightness is also amazing as if it was on your television it would catch your attention immediately. Another point that stood out to me in this video was the speed of the editing as at the beginning the editing is done to be in synchronization with the words which would of taken time to perfect it but Director 'Hype Williams' made sure it happened. The Video triggered a lot of responses, especially a strong one from the company 'Epilepsy Action' who feel this potentially triggers seizures for people who have photosensitive epilepsy. The songs lyrics and titles pop of the screen, and the bombardment of font, colours and lights all dance round the boundaries of flicker fusion. I feel the best music videos prove to be skillful adaptations evoking the intangables of a song and also performing a synesthetic conversion of sound to image. I also feel this video has a lot of visual identity and this video is it in its own segment because of the edits and the pace of video.

Video Below -

What Is The Function Of A Music Video?

A vital point in the function of a music video is promoting both the artist and the single and even in some cases the Album. I feel the most successful music video's are one which the editing is slick and there is a story behind the song. Music videos can also show the Artist's personally whether it is them being shy or contreversal for example Pop/R&B singer Christina Aguriela's video 'Dirrty' shows she is far from any shyness and loves the camera attention. The music video may even lure in new fans from the video which for them may create a new fan base, it can also tempt the target audience into buying concert ticket or tickets for events the Artist may be performing at which may be vital as Artist no longer depend on the sales of their CD's and rely on selling merchandise. Music videos can also be made to show more personal and Charity purposes for example the 'Just Stand Up' Charity song by ( Beyonce, Mary J Blige, Leona Lewis, Rihanna, Fergie, Natasha Bedingfield, Mariah ECT) can also be used to portray the artist as a kind loving human being who wants better for the World. This video was made to raise awarness to Cancer and telling the World to never give up, which I personally feel is a very inspirational video and portrays all the Artist in a positive nature.

- Video Below

Another video were I feel the Artist is showing that might be close to home and they have a personal relation to is 'Ed Shereen - The A Team' I feel this video is very emotional as it portrays the life of a young homeless girl growing up in the streets of London, how tough it is and the things she has to do to get buy to feed herself. I feel Ed Shereen has a connection to the feeling in this song as he express this throughout his lyrics for example 'sell love to another man and go mad for a couple grand' were I feel he is saying that we are all money motivated, but in this case the girl is even willing to sell her sexual assets just for money which Shereen feels is sad because she has nothing/nobody else to turn to or even rely on at that moment in time.

06. Best Video

I think that Kanye West power capsulated the true essence of what a real music video is. It attracts attention and provokes controversy. There are loads of videos on youtube linking the video to the illuminaty its a still image that has been brought to life because it is so different compared to all the other videos of the same genre in term of cinematography.

Other examples of this is
Lady Gaga:

The biblical references in this Lady Gaga video where controversial. So even people who didn't like the song would watch the video because of the amount of "hype" surrounding it. This video was successful because it has 109,447,848 views and is still growing in numbers

05. The function of a music video

The function of a music video is to

  • Make fans familiar with an artist ( Thats why there are so many close-ups)
  • To enterttain the audience
  • To give a visual to the song
  • Its more memorable
  • It sets the image for an artist

03. Skills We Learned

What we did was filmed the song 6 times in different locations and we also filmed some filling shots for the  interlude. We played the song from start to finish and i mimed the words in sync with the backing track it was hard because i didn't know the words and the mp3 we where given was way too low so it had to be close to my ears but out of the shot which made things really difficult. When we came to editing we put all of the shots in final cut pro. Mary said it was best to put the close up at the top because its the most used shot in the whole video. After that we marked a word in the song then found the same word in every shot and lined them all up. then we just marked to the beat from there the rest was just a matter of choosing which shot to use for each line of the song.

02 Things We Learned Last Year

  • Filming A music video
I didn't realise how long and monotonous making a lip-sync would be in comparison to the short film we made. In the short film, we did have hundreds of shots however, they where just quick 10 second takes so if we messed up the shot it wasn't really a problem. But when we where making the lip-sync we had to play through the whole song from every different angle. So if the shot got messed up we had to start all over again one time we got to the last 5 seconds of the shot and some random man decided to walk right infront of the camera.

  • Editing
Because of the way its filmed, editing a lip-sync was much easier than the short film. All we had to do is cut to the right shot to fit the backing track.

01. Last Years Digipack

The music video we made last year
The Digipack i made last year

Reflecting on the new skills learned when the lip sync tutorial was completed in June

Tools that we were taught to use:
·      Razor in order to cut the base tracks and clips
·      Markers to clarify where we wanted the lip synch to match to the sound
·      The crop tool to cut out bits in the video that we did not want to be on show
Text Box: R azor tool- The skill was quick to develop with, repeated practice and understanding as the tutorial was brief and simplified we were able to develop the skills quite easily.
- The hardest part of learning to lip synch was finding a suitable base track angle that matched the looked suitable for the sound.
Give a brief overview of the problems
·      Location, dogs and pests, it was in a public place so people were passing by looking into the camera, no one really knew the full song lyrics so there was a lot of laughter and errors in lipsing.
·      We used base tracks in the edit through layering them over each other
·      Could be better however, it was our first trial.
Give a brief overview of the Photoshop tutorial Marisa gave you
·      How to use the magic wand tool in order to cut out a background and keep the person in the frame only.
·      Photoshop works through layers
·      How to use the text tool
·      Adjust colours and picture sizes
·      How to insert images and effects onto Photoshop, including logos and barcodes for our back cover.
- I found Photoshop straightforward to use compared to using Final Cut Pro, as we can use our imagination and creativity much more.
Account for the reasons you chose the images on your digipak, and why you chose to place them there
·      It included both the main singers/dancers in the video itself
·      It was a unique fun screenshot, that shows them laughing and having a good time portraying that the album is quite fun.
·      There was a nice background
Account for the process of getting your chosen image into Photoshop
File, open, file and then a new page opens up, using the select tool you drag the image onto the page you want to use it and adjust the size, colour etc.
Three different tools used during the creation of your Digipak
·      Contrast/brightness
·      Text
·      Fill/paint tool
How happy are you with your finished product?
For it being my first time I am very pleased with my final product, I attempted to utilise the codes and conventions of a CD cover and, I think it came together well.
Next time I will play around with Photoshop a bit more and use a range off effects

Reflecting on the new skills learned when the lyp sync tutorial was completed in June

The new skills we learnt during or summer lesson that were to lead up to our A2 course consisted of:
  •  using final cut pro,
  • having many different base tracks of the same music video
  • and the backing track and cutting the song to the beat to help fit the lyrics with the song and the video clips.
Doing this helped everyone learn how lyrics would go with the song without having to do any guesswork in Final Cut Pro.
Using the preset clips inserted by our teachers, we put down markers every four beats in order to help cut the song and fit it with the different shots taken of the film (to be honest, parts of our music video didnt follow the rule because it didn't go at every part of the song) .
With this we were able to sync the different shots with the lyrics involving long shots wide shots two shots and so on using the splice tool. We could then combine the visual and audio components together to make a perfectly synced video. This would help us for further lipsyncing work.

Technical skills developed during the course of the AS year.

Throughout the AS year I learnt various skills like:

Camerawork skills: Using the camera with a tripod to get steady shots and using handheld for tracking type shots or following the character, this helped in many ways with effects (like somebody running)

Blogging skills: using Blogger to post our video's progress as well as delivering detailed blogs for planning and research, progress within the group and showing drafts of our video. It had encouraged me to make my very own personal blog

Conversion skills: Using Handbrake to convert our thrillers so they could go on blogger and QuickTime player

Editing Skills: I used a program on the MAC computers called Final Cut Pro to edit our thrillers, making transitions, editing still shots, merging sound from another program called soundtrack pro. Also merging text from a program called live type into final cut pro for our thrillers, arranging images on timeline, using different effects such as slow motion, reversal of time etc.

Creation of the digipak, Research and analysis of strengths and weaknessess from last term

At the end of last year, my AS class was introduced to the a brief outline of our A2 year which would be about making a music video, we had an induction which was conducted by both our AS teachers and the media technician (Mickey) who taught us the basic skills which are required to make a successful music video.  The skills included:

·         Making a whole video successful by cutting out parts in between the base tracks

·         Matching the rhythm of the tune with the video footage

And many more.

Afterwards, we were sent off to edit the same music video getting a grasp of the techniques we had just learnt. When that session was completed, we returned to our groups and was given an mp3 player with a song on it, and given the task to film footage to make a music video. The song that was given to my group was Aretha Franklin –Respect; the ‘Aretha’ of our group was Jessica because she is not camera shy and lip-syncing was a speciality of her; Shannon’s steady hand took hold of the video camera, whilst Jade and I were the dancers/ back-up singers. After a few minutes of planning, (our planning ‘session’ was very quick because our group basically had the same idea) we filmed the footage downstairs in our college canteen and in the lift. The story of the video was based about having respect for the people that serve the students food in the canteen. The original song is really about a woman asking for respect but we thought we could make a disjuncture and change the meaning making the music video much more fun to enjoy. When the footage was completed we headed back to the editing suite and began to turn chunks of footage into an actual music video. In the end (if I may add) I think our music video was very successful, our vision came to plan and there were little difficulty in production.
Here are some photos taken during the production of the 'respect' video:

In our last lesson for continuation to A2, we were taught about the codes and conventions of a digipak.

Our class were taught that when you look at a front cover, you expect to see:

·         The artists face/name

·         Artwork

·         The album name

·         Parental guidance (if needed)

The information that is conventionally included on the back cover is:

·         The name of the song/s

·         The barcode

·         Acknowledgment or producers

·         Record label

·         Image of the artist

·         Date of release

·         copyright

The images that relate to the panels help understand who the artist is and normally what genre they are about.

The content of the inside panels normally include an image, the CD housing (where the CD is placed), a booklet inside, lyrics and maybe messages.

On the spine, the information that is expected to be seen is the artist, record label and name of the album

And finally, the type of fonts used for digipak’s is plain and simple or a font that reinforces the genre.

The digipak that I created was based on the song that my group had made a video of (Aretha franklin –respect). The main picture was of the artist (which would be Jessica Nock who played the lead singer).

The digipak consisted of Jessica's picture with the song title and the group member’s names. It was decided that part of the picture had to be cropped because the picture as a whole did not include Jessica alone. We took a shot of her out of the video we had on Final cut in order to put her in the digipack. We then designed the digipack individually within our group using different fonts, font colours and tilting the texts in different directions.

The strengths of the digipak were the shot used (it was very quirky and fun) did describe the song and the artist as it was a mid-close up of Jess dancing. The texts that I used added to the eccentricity as well as the colour added. On the contrary to this was the tilted texts posed as an inconvenience because they would get in the way of the picture and it could be seen as a negative to have the artist not look directly in front of them( some people may view that as a loss of connection between the artist and the fan).

Overall it was a good simulation exercise of what we will be doing in the new academic year.
