The State of The Music Industry

The 4 Main Record Lables (Conglomerate)  ;

Universal Music

EMI Music Group

Sony + BMG Music Group

Warner Music Group

These mainstream labels have the ability to get revenue available for different acts which enable them to saturate markets and offer high production values  and promotional material. Although this sounds like positive the negative side is smaller independent labels operate with niche genres and cater to a specific market. The music industry are in major financial discomfort with the increase of illegal downloading, CD sales are down 7% from 128.8 million to 119.9 million in the UK. Since the arrival of Apples 'iTunes' customers have now opted to buy individual singles instead of purchasing a whole album this is shown as the single sales has risen dramatically. The decrease has affected a lot of big retailers for example ZAAVI who have now shut down, also popular CD shops such as HMV as they have now shut down 60 of their stores across the UK. These sales also affect other smaller more independent record companies as they have had to shut down as there revenue is decreasing due to the fact there product is not being bought. As the sales are reaching a all time low artist are now diversifiying and relying on others ways to make money. The most popular method lately is to be Touring and doing regular concerts in different country's all around the world, another common way for an artist to make money is 'subscriptions' on sites such as YouTube, Spotify and Myspace these sites allow fans to listen to the latest products from there artist and depending on how many fans subscribe to the artist page depends on how much money they may receive from promoters and investors.
