The state of the music industry

Over the past 10 years, the music industry have changed in all three areas (production, distribution and exchange)

Production: In the past, an artist would really have to go to a studio, and if they did not have enough money to make a record, they would have to find a sponsor or be funded by a record company, nowadays, people have studios in their own houses (basic and high-tech), or can record music on their computers or other devices.

Distribution: The traditional way of records and albums being distributed would have been advertising on the radio, posters and other forms of advertisement; but now, we have the help of social networks like twitter, facebook pages and other own individual websites. Also artists can advertise on specific music channels like 'channel aka'.

Exchange:Before, the only way of exchange was tapes and CD's and the only illegal way was burning a CD. Now, you have itunes where you can download an album, illegal downloading and downloading mixtapes.

Over the years, there has been a change of usage; for example, before, if I really like a video, i would call up the music channel and it was through the popular votes, would I see my music video... at random, but now i can just go onto youtube and type it in the toolbar. Or i could even go to the artists page and watch it on that.

Also, artists have to work extra hard to make their money and there are fewer ways of making money . One way where they are certain of making money are through concerts, but other than that, music channels like vevo and youtube are making nearly the same amount of money because they also make profit from other advertisements as well and the music of artists.
