3 Videos that influenced us

Not only because the video is about running away but because of the character placement within the video. When narrating in the shot with the actors, Ludacris is never in the centre of the shot always on the side just in the frame to represent his omniscience we plan to use this tactic to show Denzels Omniscience

This Video uses a similar type of cinematography that we plan to use. The way that the tapes wires create a picture of something that is actually happening. We plan to use something like this but with photograph rather than tape wires.

Analysis Of Devlin Runaway

  • The camera is always moving
  • There is no clear story to the video the lyrics pretty much do all the narrative
  • Very British locations, swagger, actions.
  • A wide variety of shots close ups long shots birds eye view
  • The actors all look sad until the end.

Our video will differ mainly because of the narrative. The video will follow one story rather than 5.
We have agreed to cut the final verse out of the song because the lyrics did had no relation to the direction that we planned to take our video in.
Our video will be British, but much less patriotic, there wont be much to insinuate that our video was filmed in London. Unless the viewer is familiar with the locations.
The artist is going to be an omniscient narrator involved in every scene with the main actors. Unlike Devlins video where him and Yasmin where never in the same shot as the actors.
There will be a clear story about what my character is going through.
Also, we plan to use some special effects combining some photography and transitions between pictures and video.

State Of The Music Industry

The music industry is loosing millions because of illegal piracy

Thanks to the internet music has become free and there is no way for artist or record labels to stop it. Paying for albums just doesn't make sense these days especially in a recession when most people listen to an album they only like around 3 or 4 of the songs on it anyway. Even if albums where better i think people would still illegal download them its just so much easier you can just sit at your computer and just a few clicks and you have the album for free.

Ways The Industry has tried to preserve the music industry?

Itunes! itunes is a website where people can legally download singles for around a pound that way you wouldn't have to buy the album you can just download the songs you like.

So how do the artist make they're money?

artist make money from performances they have never had to work harder to get paid because no one is buying the music doesn't mean that no-one likes it people will still pay to watch a live performance.

How My Skills Have Improved / Research

From last years practise music video I learned a variety of different techniques

  • My preparing shots has improved
I have now realised that when filming in a busy place pedestrians are likely to ruin the shots by entering the frame. To prevent this happening, now we have someone to stand out of shot telling people to wait or, we put up signs to let people know that we are filming.

  • Framing
Last year we filmed a shot in front of a window and didn't realise that the camera and crew where in the reflection, that ruined a lot of shots wasted footage and time.

Research:

Last year we did no research on music videos we literally just heard the song "Stand By Me" and filmed the first idea that came to mind. Now I have a much better understanding of different genres and what is expected of that genre for example
  • Hip-Hop
Video has a clear narrative that relates to story of the song equal shots of artist and narrative
  • Rap
No clear point to the video complete amplification although there is no story to the video the bragging lyrics are displayed on the screen as the rappers display how rich they are and all the sexy women that surround them. Women are likely to have big breast and big bums and wearing very little clothing.
  • R&B

Videos are typically sensual and suggestive as the genre typically is. The videos normally feature a male or female artist with a lover and they act out the words of the song either through arguments or suggestive sex it all depends on the lyrics of the song.
  • Rock
Rock videos almost always have a few shots of the band performing the song

  • Pop
Pop videos usually have some kind of cheesy dance routine throughout the song very bright colours and clothes.

Laura Mulveys Theory

Laura Mulveys main points where on the male gaze. She spoke about women just being objects of desire.
She says how there are two different ways that men perceive the women on screen either as "Voyeuristic" seeing women as whores or "Fetishistic" seeing women as Madonnas.

There is also the theory of dismemberment where women are only shown in sections. One genre that uses this very predominately in music videos is hip-hop the idea of "video bitches" or "vixens"

Examples of dismemberment

The Artist himself - Devlin

Devlin is a UK Grime artist from the more underprivalidged areas in Essex which is Dagenham. He was first noticed as an artist when he was spotted by the familiar O.T crew member 'Dogzilla' in 2006, then he was recruited by the leader and started making different tracks with other grime artist. Devlin first solo mix-tape was called 'Tales from the Crypt'. As Devlin was a one of the only white rappers in his time he received a lot of attention in the underground scene which made him even more likeable as he came with lightning fast lyrics were the content was relatable for a huge amount of teens in that time period.  When Devlin started getting older he started mixing with more known crowds in the music industry and was one of the member of 'The Movement' music group alongside british artist such as Wretch 32,Scorcher and Ghetto ECT. I personally listened to Devlin growing up as a teen and thought he was an exceptional rapper and felt he influenced a lot of young people growing up as he sent out a positive message through his songs. Devlin is also one of the UK up and coming rappers he has already been nominated as the best breakthrough act at the 'Virgin Music Awards' and nominated as having the best 'Sound of 2010' which I feel at this young age is phenomenal. One song that stood out to me was 'Community Outcast' which I felt was targeted at young people to tell them whats going on in the community and that it needs to change. In the song he talks about the elderly, people with no homes, and people who struggle with multiple children. The chorus is started by Devlin saying 'I represent for the people, let down by a nation and left in the streets where its evil' and then later goes on to describe what is was like for him growing up around knifes and heroin needles. I feel this song went very far in connecting to teens because it made it think about what was happening around them, its also positive that is one of the reasons why we chose 'Devlin' to be our artist as the teens play a big roll in the music industry today and his songs connect with them on a personal level which I feel music is the to do, express feelings!

Filming Day 1

Date - 18.10/2011
Location - Canal
Scene - Beginning of of 2nd verse

This tuesday morning we had the intention of filming but did not schedule properly the night before what we were going to do. When we came to the lesson we figured we never had a solid plan of what we wanted to, we then decided for the 1st half of the lesson we were going to plan what location we were heading to and what shots we wanted to use. We sat down as a group and our first idea was to go to a canal but then by now it was 10.30 and the camera had to be back in college by 12.15, so we had to consider the timing plus how long it would take us to get from college to the location then back again and film in-between. We then decided that is not a good idea and thought of a place more local, then I came with the idea of going to the idea of going to the canal basically across the road from college. The group quickly agreed to this and we co-operative as some of them have previously filmed there before for there 'Thriller' movie in the AS year. When we got to the location I felt we got some very good shot for example a lot of close ups on the artist, over the shoulder and a type of birds eye view. Another thing that made me happy was the shots we took at the beginning of shooting as we felt we could edit that brilliantly on Final Cut Pro which we feel will look very good.

Filming Day One

I wanted to wait till we got the pictures and behind the scenes of our first day filming, then do a mini report on it but I'll have to wait till after half term.. ANYWAYS

Date: 18/10/11
Location: Canal (near college)
Scene: Shazray contemplating running away, Denzel and Olivia playing omniscient narrators and performing

We came to Tuesday's with the intention to film although as Rebecca said 'are you ready to film?' or something along those lines, we all looked slightly puzzled. Rather than going out straight away to film, with no clue of what to film and where we decided to go to a quiet room far from the media department (library) and discuss thoroughly what we would like to film. So we agreed to use the first half of the lesson on thorough detailed planning and this was VERY beneficial because after the first half of our 3hour lesson we went out and done some successful filming. We had the odd case of passer byers which meant we had to stop and start but we managed to work around it. We got very nice shots and made good use of the remaining sun we had, we managed to film a whole verse and chorus whilst getting various shots for us to use and edit.
Overall I was very happy with the turnout, detailed planning means detailed filming.

PLANNING: Ideas & Items band

Now that we are in the process of filming and we have room for improvement, I think that it is important to put down some inspiration we found a while ago. Whilst I (Mariama) was looking through my media book I found some notes during planning
Slow motions
Panning out
Fades in and out
Letter box
The radio effect in the beginning of the video (someone turning up the volume)
Titles
Reflections
Extreme close ups

BAND CLICHE ITEMS
Mobile phones
Hoodies
Flashback narrative
Avoid a backshot

Digipaks

I recently 'googled' some Digipaks and here is what I found. They are all very different because of things like genre and when they were made. For example the N-Dubz one is highly edited and we can tell an advanced photo editor was used. Right now I am very interested in Indie digipaks because they are very simple and artistic !

Understanding the artist

Devlin is a UK Grime artist and as we are trying to duplicate an artist similar to him it is important that we know about Grime artists and what we expect of them. We have already started filming although it is still important that we look at Devlin as an artist and analyse his gestures, body language and his tone.
Grime artists tend to use a lot of hand movement, because Grime is such a 'gritty' and sometimes 'hard' genre it is usually used to deliver a strong message, such as topics on crime, sad topics, politics etc. This may be a reason why in some areas in the UK young people use Grime and Rap as a form of threatening or delivering a message to someone or something. When I watched the video Runaway there was a lot of hand movement, being waved everywhere and Denzel our main performer delivers this well. Below are some screen shots of Devlin's expressions, body language and gestures we see often in his music videos and I hope either to incorporate into ours or use to differentiate our artist from him.

-Devlin's gestures seem slightly aggressive because he frowns a lot when rapping. However Denzel (our main performer) does not frown as much and he seems much more calm when rapping, however you see his passion through his gestures which are pointing at the audience and are waved around slightly although still not aggressive.

Other sites to examine - YouTube and Twitter

Although almost every established artist has their own website in my opinion I don't think people look at it as often as they do other sites such as an artists Ustream, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube channel. There has been many developments in the technology industry which has been beneficial to other areas of the music industry such as marketing which has allowed artists to reach their audience in different ways.

Twitter
As I have my own Twitter account and because of the popularity of Twitter, I think it is safe to say that Twitter is  one of the best ways a fan can keep up with the life of a celebrity. Whenever I want to see when my favourite artist is releasing an album, new song or just want to be nosey and know what they are up to I go straight onto Twitter. A reason for its popularity is because it's such a quick way of communicating with the rest of the world and it is available as an app on smartphones and accessed via a PC/Laptop. With only 160 characters per tweet you can deliver a message quickly and effectively which is essential because music artists and celebrities in general are very busy. Furthermore it is a good way for artists to communicate with fans as they to can respond to them. For example some of my friends have received a reply from established artists such as 'Kimora Lee Simmons', followed by Rihanna (JEALOUS MUCH!) and has had a retweet from Nicki Minaj (ALSO VERY JEALOUS)
- Lets see how Devlin makes use of his Twitter...

The first thing we see here is exactly what I was talking about. Interaction with fans, updates on the artist's life and promotion of their music. Within his biography he tells us that he is currently on tour with Jessie J, who he is signed to and his current album that it out. Below on the timeline he gives fans an update on what he is doing/does on a daily basis. Furthermore below that we see a form of interaction with his fans which allows fans to feel much more closer to an artist. Twitter also provides a form of statistics for example out of my 500 followers only 1 follows Devlin. However many of my followers are American therefore he may be unknown to them or people might not like him enough to follow him. Though his 100,000+ followers tell us that he is quite popular for a UK artist.

YouTube
YouTube the new MTV? Being able to watch a video in your own comfort, in your own home and also receiving extras such as video acoustics, short documentaries and interviews. Why not? YouTube is also used as a form of distribution and exchange. Because there are millions of viewers worldwide YouTube advertise other artists through using them as backgrounds, headers and even pre-rolls.

Features on Devlin's YouTube channel:
- Video uploads
- Extra footage and interviews
- List of his subscribers (almost the same as followers on Twitter though he has more followers than subscribers)
- Short biography
- Comments
- His own header and background which makes it 'his own' and personalises it
- Also YouTube videos provide a like or dislike button, therefore if you were to see a random video with 230,000 viewers,50,000 likes and 1000 dislikes your prone to watch it because it could be your next favourite music video and others like it

Day 2 of Filming

Before we had broken up from college for the half-term, we decided to book a camera kit to film during the half term on the thursday. The location that we filmed at was in the estate which was down the road from college.
Take a look at the videos below to see how our day went.

Denzel (as the cameraman) getting some good shots of Shazray
As a team, we strongly believe to do as much as possible, whislt Denzel was filming Shazray, Mariama and Iwere also busy thinking of some other cool stuff and different ways to shoot our music video. Listen to our idea for the balcony:

Here we have a sneak-peak of Denzel performing:

Day 2 of Filming : Costume

Here are some pictures of the cast today focusing on the type of clothing that they wore for our music video.
Here we are in one of our locations (on the road, at a bus stop)

Denzel

I'm wearing :
* New Era Snapback (from the new era shop)
* Ralph Lauren Red Hoody ( from zee and co)
* Ralph Lauren Bomber Jacket (from zee and co)
*Beige Combats ( from topman)
*Nike Blazer Trainers ( from nike town)

Shazray:

I'm wearing :
Green Jacket (H&M)
Blue Hoody (H&M)
Combat Trousers (Peacocks)
Converses (Schuh)
Blue Nike Bag (Argos)

I chose this outfit for my character because its typical runaway attire. The hoodie under the jacket represents that it is cold therefore the character has planned this running away its not just a spontaneous thing. i'm not wearing really trendy or expensive clothes because i know my character is going to be sleeping rough and enduring rain so he is prepared for it. I chose the travel bag because its small and shows that he is planning a fresh start therefore only bringing sentimental and essential item with him.

Olivia-Zara

I'm wearing:
  •  a maxi skirt with a belt (from new look)
  • Green top (from Topshop)
  • Black Cardigan (from H&M)
  • Black bag (TK Maxx- Calvin Klein)
  • Blue pump flats (a boutique in London Bridge)
This is very simple yet stylish, and even though its my own personal style, it also is kind of like what the female singer wears in the video. I didn't want to wear something over the top because that would not be conventional with the music video plus we discussed to wear stuff that would relate the the scenery and urban background of the music video.

Shortlist Of Potential Performers

We, as a group, decided to not depend on people outside our group because we didn't want to put our trust in someone (or a number of people) to disappoint us with stuff like performance, bad time keeping (or not even showing up at all) and unable to take proper direction.

So from the start, 3 of our members would play a part in our music video and they are :

Olivia-Zara
Denzel and
Shazray

Here they are

Filming Day 2

Date - 27.10.2011
Location - Shazrays Block
Scene - Beginning of the video as Shazray leaves the block and heads up the road/ walk past Olivia 1st chorus.

A huge success. Filming day 2 took part in a indoor location as the on and off rain damaged our plans but we could easily work around that and waited for the drizzles to clear up before we went outside. We filmed in EC1 in a block of flats were our group member Shazray lives, the location suited what we wanted to do that day which was get different shots of the supporting Artist leaving the house. I felt in this day we got a lot of different shots of Shazray leaving the block and most importantly the number of close ups we got were excellent. Whilst filming the only problem we had was for the location of one of the chorus's were we wanted a new location but for Olivia and Shazray to be in the same shot which continues the theme of a story happening while the Artist is in the background reciting the lyrics. We resolved this problem fast as we found a nearby bustop which was empty and done this shot. Also when filming we had to bring an umbrella provided by college as it was raining and just in case it was raining whilst we were filming the camera's and flip cameras will not be damaged.

Day 2 of Filming : Little Report

Today, the filming for our music video took part in the estate that Shazray lives in. We made sure that there was some shelter where we would be filming as we knew today the weather was not looking good and we unfortunately had some on and off rain but as we wanted to make sure that no equipment would be damaged we carried an umbrella so our plans would not be ruined. Even though we had to carry the umbrella along protecting the camera, we still could easily work around  whilst filming and it did not distract us at all .

The location suited what we were discussing in our class lessons and we were able to get different shots of the performer (shazray) leaving the estate.
Compared to the last day that we all filmed, i feel that we have got much more different shots of Shazray and also the main artist which is played by Denzel. These shots consisted of point of view, over the shoulder , mid close ,full length shots and many more.

Most of the time was focused on Denzel's performance and Shazray's, so Mariama and I were left to film behind scenes, check out the scenery and if there are more places and shots we could get, we basically wanted more that what we anticipated for so when it comes to editing m we would have no regrets or feel that we would have to re-film.

The slightest problem  had occurred was for the location of one of the chorus's where we wanted a new location where Olivia and Shazray would be able to be in the same shot which continues the theme of a story happening while an artist in the background reciting the lyrics so we went to a bus stop on the main road where it was empty and filmed the part.

PLANNING FOR MUSIC VIDEO: Examine the website for the original artist and discuss how they use it to promote their brand image and songs

When you scroll down the page further there are posts that follow up on his everyday life, which I assume are mainly for fans who would like to catch up with him. There are also behind the scenes videos, pictures etc and  on the side we have a link and a screen shot of his Twitter and the amount of FaceBook fans he has which allows his fans to follow up on his latest tweets etc.

He uses his website to promote his music through Gifs/animations . Below the mailing list there is an image of his album cover and animation was used to allow it to advertise the release date of his album.

One of the links on the navigation bar is called 'Video' and once clicked viewers get to see all his current videos and features which promote himself, his music and the artists he is recording with.

PLANNING FOR MUSIC VIDEO: My favourite new music video

Over a week or two ago, the music video for Rihanna - We Found Love FINALLY came out. I really like this song and I love Rihanna as an artist. Although her music videos tend to be very controversial and sometimes 'raunchy' all I could think was what is she going to do next !? And here we have it !!

Yep Rihanna has done it again incorporated some element of love, sex and drugs in her music video but no that is not why I love the video so much. After going through previous handouts given to us on Andrew Goodwin I came across this statement 'The visualisation of a song may go beyond the original meaning. Sometimes the video provides a visual pleasure that encourages repeated viewing which therefore promotes the music.... the video might be promoting other commodities' This video does exactly that. After I watched it the first time, something inside of me told me to go back and watch it, again and again and again. I personally think the video slightly promotes a hipster lifestyle and fashion minus the drugs which some may argue she condones but I personally think it is a part of the structure of the narrative. After watching the video like 6 times within 3 hours (note it hadn't come out on TV yet) I decided to analyse it like the good media student I am.

The first thing I noticed was the location, as an American artist I was slightly confused as to where she shot the video. After watching it the second time I came to a conclusion that she shot the video in the UK. The reason being is because in the opening scene we see a block of tall flats, which look like they are in England, there is a scene of her and her co-star in a Fish & Chips shop which is one of England's trademarks, in the arcade she inserts pound notes. Although I wondered why she chose England and not one of the fifty something states in America. It then occurred to me that the lighting was very dim, and slightly grey and when many visitors come over from the USA the first thing they notice is how 'grey' England is in comparison to America. So I think it fit perfectly. Although after doing some research I found out that it was set in Northern Ireland (close enough).
The video is central to Rihanna and her 'boyfriend' and we see plenty of jump cuts, and fast edits of them in different situations which may connote a day in the life of the two. We see them in both love and hate scenarios, the use of the drug overdose depicts their actions through fast and slow editing which is parallel to the tempo of the song itself. I really liked this idea because although my groups song choice is quite slow we have elements of the narrative that are both fast (such as the running) although we also have scenes that will be edited parallel to the song tempo.
Drugs are used very cleverly as a form of mise en scene in this video. It represents an addiction and we see how love is compared as a drug and an addiction between her and her partner. We see the ups and downs of the relationship throughout the video and how toxic and heated it can get which is also illustrated through the drugs and overdose. For a while it is a lot of fun although there are also a lot of dangers and we see this through her being sick which is also editing effectively.

Not only is the song great but, the video is as well. The concept was thoroughly thought out and a big risk because it has been compared to her own situations. Despite that I absolutely love this video.

PLANNING FOR MUSIC VIDEO: Analyse 3 music videos that have influenced your final planning

Video NO.1 Ashanti - Foolish

Whilst we were in lesson, we realised that we had not properly planned and researched a proper closing to our music video. We wanted it to be very effective and incorporate good use of editing and camera work. We searched for videos on YouTube that were to do with a guy coming back to his girlfriend and then I got that 'light bulb above your head feeling'. I remembered a video by RnB singer Ashanti, and how effective the end of her music video was, the use of match cuts and over the shoulder shots were really effective, and there was also very good editing used and use of wipes etc. I suggested this idea to my group and we all really liked the idea. Below is the music video, 3.57 is where we got our inspiration.

Video NO.2 Bruno Mars - Just the way you are

You've probably seen this video over 10 times on our blog, but this video is one of our biggest inspirations and has influenced our music video greatly. Although the song has nothing to do with ours, watching the first few seconds of this video gave us our visual motif, as well as an excellent way to start of our video. Furthermore the inspiration we gained from this video will really test our editing skills. Our visual motif and opening is going to be Shazray our main performer bumping into Denzel our main artist and drawings falling onto the floor. The drawing will be of a man lying in bed with his girlfriend, as the camera moves in closer to the drawing it will begin to merge into the actual narrative and from there Shazray will wake up and the rest of the narrative with flow as planned. We got our influence from 0.16 to 0.45. It amazed us how he used an old-fashioned piece of equipment to create an effective opening.

Video NO.3 Ludacris ft Mary J Blige - Runaway Love

We decided to look at music videos that had a narrative of running away or simply someone going to a destination, as well as songs that were to do with running away. One song that we were all very familiar with was 'Runaway Love' it's a music video that is very memorable and touches very sensitive topics. However we got our inspiration from the way the artists were used as performers and narrators. In 0.50 we see how Ludacris is represented as an omniscient narrator in the sense that he is in a background of a scene and only visible to the audience, whilst the actors illustrate what he is rapping about. We decided to use this technique when Shazray our performer is contemplating his actions in the Canal. Furthermore we thought that using a technique as such will help us experiment with the way the artist is used as both a narrator and performer.

Skills Audit

In the beginning of the AS year I would say my level of skills were amateur, but when we got into making and producing our 'Thriller' movies I feel my level of skill improved dramatically. This was because we were showed by our teachers how to use different hardware and software but also because we were actually making a product at the end of filming so I was very eager to learn ways in which will make my film the highest quality. In the AS year we started our research by watching different thriller opening for inspiration and analyzing them to say why we found them appealing. A lot of the opening I personally found the best was the ones which created suspense and had a wide range of different shots which kept me engaged which I like to input in any filming I do. I particularly liked the openings that played with the physiological mind frame of the audience as when watching I took a personal interest into what will happen to certain characters. Through analyzing these different opening, hearing from different directors and class discussions I also got other people perspectives which was really interesting as they were different to mine and it made me look at things from different angles to see where different people were coming from. This year its vital the camera shots are to the highest level and also the amount of close ups are used more then any other, also when choosing the song its not choosing about performing one of your favorite songs as it proved students who do that don't get the same ideas as if they were to do a song they were unfamiliar with because the song is fresh in your mind the idea range is wide!. The Digipak we will create will show the image or creation the artist feels most relates to him and the tracks on the Album, this is important as we also need to show the genre through this and in some cases have an image of the Artist themselves. My group also need to make sure that our Digipak relates to the target audience we are aiming the song at because different Digipaks appeal to different audiences.

Audience Task

We decided the target audience for our song will be both males and females because there is both a male and female perspective in this song. I feel the ages that are most likely to listen to this song are 14 +  - early 30's as anyone above or below these ages may not get the lyrics or may feel they are recited to fast.
